Relationships That Matter

At a recent convention with sales leaders from around the globe a conversation began around a strategic group of individuals in YPO.  These were all young presidents of companies that had attained over $10mm in sales before the president of each company was 40 years old.  About 300 of these presidents of companies were given a task of writing down three goals that they had.  300 individuals, 3 goals each, so a total of 900 goals and of these 900 goals only TWO involved relationships.

The point that was being made is that business is important and drives what we do, but relationships are what last and are the reason behind what we do.  The trucking industry is no different.  True, we spend a lot of solitary time on the road, but we do it for the relationships we have, whether that be a spouse or children, friends and neighbors, or even the work relationships we come in contact with.

Interesting Facts About the Trucking Industry Continued..

For those of you who didn't get enough from our post last week, we continue with.....

Strange & Interesting Facts About the Trucking Industry:

6.  Are you Articulate?

Semi trucks are called by many different names depending on the region of the world they're located in...  In the Americas you'll hear "tractor trailers", "big-rigs", "18 wheelers", or "semis".  In Canada you could hear a "transport truck".  Australians may refer to them as "singles" and in Britain & Ireland they are called "articulated lorries" or "artic" for short.

7.  Who's Afraid of the Big (Bad) Rig?

Semi trucks have been featured in many movies as the "villain" character.  Stephen Spielberg's 1971 feature, Duel, has a Peterbilt tanker truck as the villain of the film.  Stephen King's 1986 feature, Maximum Overdrive, also has big-rigs as primary villainous characters.  John Dahl's 2001 film, Joy Ride, featuring the late Paul Walker also has a faceless villain driving a semi truck that chases down the protagonists of the film.

8.  Planning on Accidents

Commercial Trucks are involved in accidents much less frequently than people may believe.  In fact statistically trucks are 3 times less likely to be involved in an accident than a regular motor vehicle.  In addition, only 16% of all truck driving accidents are due to the fault of the truck driver!

9.  Uncle Sam Loves Truckers

Over 33 billion dollars a year is paid by commercial trucks in federal and state highway user taxes.  That's a lot of dough that goes into the upkeep of our roads and interstate highways benefiting not only truck drivers but the average passenger vehicle driver as well.

10.  Got Your Rubber?

With an estimated 3 million Class 8 trucks registered in the US, and 18 wheels per truck we're looking at a grand total of 54 million truck tires on the road.  That's 5 billion, 400 million pounds of rubber!

Truck Driving in the Wind

Driving in high winds with a high profile vehicle can be extremely dangerous, yet there are times you need to press on regardless of weather conditions.  Based on a video you may or may not have seen that was posted a few days ago, we thought this might be a good time to remember some tips when truck driving in the wind.

First, take a look at this miraculous save by the driver who should be commended for his quick reaction which kept his vehicle on the ground:

Tips for Driving Semi Tractor Trailers in the Wind:

First off, it must be said that if weather conditions are severe enough to cause a burst or gust of wind like in the video above, a driver is ALWAYS better off pulling to the side of the road and waiting for conditions to calm.  Safety comes first and the time you might save is not worth potentially destroying your load and wrecking your vehicle or trailer.

If conditions are difficult but drive-able, keep these tips in mind:

  1. Have a plan.  This includes potential alternative routes as well as allocating additional time as weather conditions can delay your speed significantly!
  2. Keep your speed low.  A lower speed will present less counter-currents and will keep your trailer from tipping or lifting as seen in the video above.
  3. Maintain your distance.  In any weather condition that may complicate your driving you want to maintain additional space between you and any other vehicle.  In heavy winds you may want to keep space on both sides of your vehicle as well to prevent a sudden shift from a strong gust.
  4. Watch for debris.  Winds can bring all kinds of debris flying at you depending on where you are driving.  Stay alert and keep your eyes open for anything on the side of the road that might leap out at you.
  5. Listen to your gut.  Again, if you are having any doubts as to your ability to maneuver safely through winds take the opportunity to be safe rather than sorry.  Pull over and hit the roads once conditions have calmed.

Do Your Homework Online First!

One of the great benefits of making a purchase in the digital age is being able to do your research online prior to coming in to a dealership.  Not only has this been a tremendous help for purchasers but it has also helped level the playing field for most dealers.  Competitive pricing and price integrity are now transparent as you can see a dealership's inventory online prior to walking in their door. We are constantly updating our inventory which can be found at www.fontanatrucksandtrailers.com

Once you've found a piece of equipment that looks promising you want to also do some research to see what that vehicle might be selling for.  Google can be your best friend in this stage of the buying process. Keep in mind as you compare costs that every vehicle is different and there are many factors that will affect pricing beyond the basic specs of a truck or trailer.  We've offered some tips for purchasing used trailers as well as things to consider when purchasing used semis.

As your search narrows down you'll want to eventually contact the dealership or stop in to

Inspect / Test Drive the Equipment.

This is your chance to make sure that what was advertised online is true to form.  Take your time with the equipment you're considering, ask the sales professionals questions about where it came from and weigh all your options against the price that is being asked.  If you are happy with what you see you'll want to move quick by either applying for credit or putting a deposit down.  This is extremely important with Used Equipment as typically no two trucks or trailers will be in exactly the same condition and shape.  Because your homework was done upfront there is no need to delay the process or continue looking as chances are the truck or trailer you've found might be purchased by someone else tomorrow.

Here at Prime Time Equipment we take pride in helping our customers find the right equipment for their needs.  With a non-pushy environment and sales professionals that are more concerned with doing what's right for the customer, we have built a name for ourselves that revolves around great service and great equipment.  We look forward to helping you find the right Used Truck or Trailer in Fontana!
